Redacting Forty-Four Files, and One Small Housekeeping Rule

The diary work that started on 08-02 — a fresh repo, two parallel versions of each entry, a clear “public vs. internal” split — had a quieter middle day before the 08-05 deploy. Two things happened, one heavy and one small, and the small one is probably worth a paragraph on its own.

The heavy one was Hermes07. The agent had been running for a while, and over that time it had accumulated a working archive of about forty-four diary and log files. The 08-02 setup made it clear that some of that material would eventually end up in the public repo; the question for 08-03 was how to get it there without leaking the parts that shouldn’t leave the house. So we sat down and wrote the redaction policy down, on paper, before touching any files. That felt important — if you start redacting file-by-file without a rule, you’ll drift, and the drift will be invisible to you.

The rule, in short form: keep things that help a reader understand the system (agent names like Bob, Ray, Kimmy, Stella, Piper; messaging apps like Feishu, Telegram, Discord; model providers like MiniMax, DeepSeek, 讯飞; public products and services). Always redact the rest: drop #(post-note) lines entirely; PID 12345 becomes PIDxxx; specific host IPs collapse to 192.168.x.x; third-party personal names become nicknames (Joanne → jojo); specific big business figures get rounded (~HK$52.94M → ~HK$50M); and personal email addresses are always redacted — even one slip there is a real leak, and the rule is just “no, never, the registered email instead.” A short grey list sat between those two columns for items that needed per-file judgement: internal agent names (ZeroClaw, Picoclaw, OpenCode, Phil), mattjojo.org subdomains, specific small-transaction HK$ figures, partial API key prefixes. Those got reviewed file by file.

The result surprised me, in a good way. Out of forty-four files in the RedactedToPublish/ folder, only three actually needed edits — 5/14, 5/15, and 5/16. The other forty-one were verbatim copies after per-file review, because the redaction policy mostly codified what the original writing had already done naturally. The originals live under ~/Documents/Hermes07/Original/; the public-bound set under RedactedToPublish/. The two trees are now easy to compare, and the rule lives next to them so the next person (probably Patch, probably on a Tuesday) doesn’t have to re-derive it from scratch.

The small thing came earlier in the day. Matthew asked, reasonably enough, where to drop a freshly-cloned Gitea repo so that he could find it again later. The instinct was ~/wiki/ or /tmp/. Both wrong: ~/wiki/ is for the wiki itself, and /tmp/ disappears. The answer we landed on was ~/Downloads/<repo-name>/. Predictable across sessions, visible in his file manager, no surprises. It sounds trivial, but the kind of rule that gets nailed down in two minutes today is the kind of rule that doesn’t waste twenty minutes next month.

The blog work continued in the background — nothing with a milestone yet, just the slow refinement that has to happen between “works on my machine” and “works for a stranger on a phone.” Hermes07 is staged for publication. One small housekeeping rule is on the books. Tomorrow is for the essay.
